Terms of Service
Last updated
These terms are an agreement between you and Deoxy Labs ("we" or "us") about your use of Backplane: the website at backplaneapp.com, the designer at canvas.backplaneapp.com, apps published at backplane.page addresses, the Backplane API and related services. By creating an account or using Backplane, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.
If you use Backplane on behalf of a company or other organization, you agree to these terms for it and confirm that you're authorized to do so. In that case, "you" means the organization.

Using Backplane
- You must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live, to create an account and build apps.
- People invited to use an app must be at least 13. Workspace owners are responsible for who they invite, including getting a parent's or guardian's permission for anyone under 18 where the law requires it.
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep your email address current, since it's how we reach you.
- Keep your password, sign-in codes and API keys to yourself. You're responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has used it, tell us right away at support@deoxylabs.com.
- Each verified email address can own one free workspace. Don't create extra accounts or workspaces to get around plan limits.
Workspaces and roles
A workspace belongs to its owners. Owners can invite editors, who build apps, and app users, who use the apps they're invited to. Owners decide who has access and can remove anyone at any time. If you join someone else's workspace, its owners control the content you add there, and they can remove your access.
Your content
Your content is everything you or the people using your apps put into Backplane, such as apps, screens, settings, icons, images, items, photos and files. You keep all your rights in it.
You give us permission to host, store, copy, process, transmit and display your content only as needed to run Backplane for you, to keep it secure and to do what you ask, such as publishing an app or sending a webhook. This permission ends when your content is deleted, except for copies in backups, which expire as our Privacy Policy describes.
You're responsible for your content and for having the rights to use it. We don't review content before it's published, but we may remove content or take an app offline if it breaks these terms or the law.
Apps you publish
You're responsible for the apps you publish and for how you use the information they collect. If your apps collect personal information, you must tell the people using them what you collect and why, get any consent the law requires, and handle their requests about their information. We process that information on your behalf as our Privacy Policy describes. If your organization needs a data processing agreement, email us.
Each app you publish has its own backplane.page address. Invite-only apps ask people to sign in. Public apps, on plans that include them, open for anyone who has the link.
Templates
You can share an app as a template, either with the people who build in your workspace or, if you're the workspace's owner, with everyone on Backplane. A template is a copy of the app's design: its screens, tables and their rules, automations, images and icon, and any starting items you choose to include. It never includes the items people entered in the app.
When you share a template with everyone, you give other Backplane users a worldwide, royalty-free license to copy it, change it and use it in their own apps, including for commercial use, and you give us the right to show it in the template library. You must own what's in it or have permission to share it, it must follow the acceptable use rules below, and it shouldn't contain anyone's personal information.
We review templates shared with everyone before we list them, and we can decline or remove any template. Removing a template stops new apps from being made from it. Apps that people already made from it are their own copies, and they keep them.
Templates made by other users come from their authors as they are. Check that a template does what you need before you rely on it.
Acceptable use
Don't use Backplane to:
- break the law, or help anyone else break it;
- pretend to be another person or organization, or collect passwords, payment details or other sensitive information under false pretenses;
- send spam, including invitations people didn't ask for;
- harass, threaten or harm anyone, or publish content that sexualizes minors or promotes violence against people;
- infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights;
- spread malware or anything meant to damage devices, data or accounts;
- probe or test the security of Backplane without our written permission, or get around its access rules or plan limits;
- put an unreasonable load on Backplane, or scrape it;
- copy, resell or rebrand Backplane itself, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows; or
- collect personal information from children under 13.
Backplane isn't built for data that needs special legal agreements. Don't store payment card numbers, health information covered by HIPAA, criminal justice information or similar regulated data in it unless we've agreed in writing. Don't rely on Backplane where a failure or delay could lead to death, injury or serious damage.
Plans, limits and payment
Backplane has a free plan and paid plans, with the prices and limits shown on our pricing page. When a workspace reaches a limit, only the action that would go over it stops, such as adding items or publishing another app, until the monthly count starts over, you make room or you move to a larger plan. Nothing is deleted because a workspace reached a limit.
Paid plans are billed monthly in advance, in US dollars, plus any taxes that apply. They renew each month until you cancel. To start a paid plan, contact us and we'll send an invoice. Enterprise prices and terms are agreed in writing.
You can cancel a paid plan at any time by emailing us. Your workspace keeps the plan until the end of the month you've paid for, then moves to Free. We don't refund partial months unless the law requires it.
If a workspace moves to a smaller plan, nothing in it is deleted, but anything over the new plan's limits can't grow until it's back under them, and features the new plan doesn't include stop working.
We may change prices and limits. If a change raises your price or reduces what your plan includes, we'll tell you at least 30 days before it applies to you. If an invoice is more than 30 days overdue, we may move the workspace to Free.
Unused free workspaces
A free workspace nobody uses for 90 days is deleted, with its apps, items, photos and files. Use means someone opens the workspace in the designer, uses one of its apps or calls its API. We email its owners 20, 10 and 5 days before, and any of those actions resets the clock. A deleted workspace can't be restored.
The AI builder
The AI builder drafts apps and changes from your descriptions. Its output can be wrong or incomplete, so check it before you publish. What you type into it and what it produces are your content. We send your descriptions to our AI provider as our Privacy Policy describes.
The API and other services
You may use the Backplane API with your API keys, within your plan's limits. Anyone who has a key can use it, so keep keys secret and revoke any you no longer need.
Backplane works with services from other companies, such as Google and Microsoft sign-in, the systems your webhooks reach and device management tools. Their own terms cover those services, and we aren't responsible for them.
Our rights
Backplane, including its software, design, templates and brand, belongs to Deoxy Labs. These terms give you the right to use Backplane, not ownership of any part of it. You may use our templates in your apps however you like.
If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything.
Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use personal information. For personal information in your content, we act on your behalf, following the instructions you give through the way you set up and use Backplane.
Copyright and abuse reports
If you believe something on Backplane infringes your copyright, send a notice to support@deoxylabs.com that includes:
- your name, your contact details and your physical or electronic signature;
- the work you believe is infringed;
- the address of the app or page with the material, with enough detail for us to find it;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn't authorized by the owner, its agent or the law; and
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you're the owner or authorized to act for the owner.
When we receive a valid notice, we'll remove or disable the material. If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you can send us a counter-notice. We close the accounts of repeat infringers when appropriate.
To report an app that breaks these terms, such as one built for phishing, email support@deoxylabs.com with its address.
Suspension and closure
You can stop using Backplane at any time and ask us to delete your account.
We may suspend or close your account, or take an app offline, if you break these terms, if it's needed to protect Backplane, its users or the public, or if the law requires it. When we can, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If we close your account for any reason other than a serious or repeated breach, we'll give you at least 30 days to export your content first.
If we stop offering Backplane, we'll tell you at least 30 days ahead and give you a way to export your content.
The parts of these terms that by their nature should last, such as ownership, the disclaimer of warranties, the limitation of liability and how disputes are handled, continue after an account is closed.
Changes to these terms
Backplane will change over time, and we may add, change or remove features.
We may update these terms, and we'll post the new version here with a new date. If a change reduces your rights, we'll tell you by email or in the designer at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless it's needed sooner for legal or security reasons. If you keep using Backplane after a change takes effect, you accept it. If you don't agree, stop using Backplane and ask us to delete your account.
Disclaimer of warranties
Backplane is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. We don't promise that Backplane will be uninterrupted, error-free or free of data loss. Keep your own copy of anything important: you can export any table as a CSV file or read it through the API.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Deoxy Labs won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from or related to Backplane or these terms, even if we were told they were possible. Our total liability for all claims related to Backplane or these terms is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us for Backplane in the 12 months before the event that led to the claim.
These limits apply whatever the legal theory, and they don't limit liability that the law doesn't allow us to limit.
Indemnity
If you use Backplane for a business or other organization, you'll defend Deoxy Labs against any claim by a third party arising from your content, your apps, or your breach of these terms or the law, and pay the resulting damages, costs and reasonable legal fees.
Governing law and disputes
Texas law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Before filing a claim, email us at support@deoxylabs.com and give us 30 days to try to resolve it. Any lawsuit about these terms or Backplane must be brought in the state or federal courts in Brazos County, Texas, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction.
If you're a consumer, nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the law where you live that can't be waived by agreement.
General terms
- These terms, the Privacy Policy and any written agreement for an Enterprise plan are the whole agreement between you and us about Backplane.
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
- If we don't enforce part of these terms right away, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our written permission. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
- We aren't responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control.
- You must follow US export control and sanctions laws when you use Backplane, and you may not use it where those laws prohibit it.
- We send notices to the email address on your account. Send notices to us at support@deoxylabs.com.
